Abandoned Train Tunnels - Level Design Course

A prototype level created as part of the Into Games Level Design Course taught by Peter Field, which I joined in June 2023.

Created in Unreal Engine 5, this level is set in an abandoned train tunnel system, complete with tunnels and train tracks to explore. The level is currently unfinished, but the video serves as a showcase of the ideas I was going for - strong use of atmospheric lighting to guide the player, visible faraway goals, and curved, organic surfaces to explore.

As well as creating the prototype level, I built a Metrics gym, and a series of reusable level elements. This level helped build my understanding of Unreal's modelling tools.

Metrics built for stepping/jumping, and for slopes. Blue elements are safe to include in levels, red are not. I focused on creating buffers such that each type of surface is clearly readable. I.e., a player can clearly see the difference between a platform they can walk onto and one they must jump to.

The level itself. My focus was atmospheric lighting, and how it can be used to guide the player through the environment. The level is unfinished, but the plan was to add more tunnels and ramps for the player to move through and along.
